Why choose underfloor heating?
Underfloor heating provides heating using radiant heat, rather than blown heat. Radiant heat warms up objects and even when turned off the level of warmth in a room stays higher for longer. By comparison blown heat (like fan heaters or heat pumps) blow heat into the air but tend to have little effect on warming objects in the room. This means that the room will be cooler almost immediately when a blown heat source is turned off.
Radiant heat also helps maintain the natural humidity in a room, unlike blown heat which tends to dry out the room’s air. Radiant heat tends to be less expensive to run than other heat sources, maintains even temperatures and is silent – as there are no fans in use.
Radiant heat will not make an instant difference to a rooms heat – but is a longer term heating solutions, heating up a room over 30 -60 minutes, or longer depending on the mass the heater is heating. This makes it ideal to maintain a house’s temperature but wont work if you are looking for a quick instant heat source.
Underfloor heating is one of the safest forms of radiant heating with no wires, pipes, radiators or other items to get burnt on, trip over or have to tuck away from the kids. It maintains safe temperatures removing the risk of burns and is mostly automated by thermostats and timers – for your convenience.
Cost is a big factor in people’s heating choices. Underfloor heating offers lower running costs than blown heat sources as it is able to maintain warmth (even ambient temperature) at a lower temperature, when compared to blown heat sources that require a higher heat source to offset the heat losses. Hydronic underfloor heating improves on the heating cost savings by using highly efficient heat pump technologies giving you more heat output for every kilowatt of power put in. Compared to electric underfloor heating a heat pump driven underfloor heating system is highly cost effective.
